Davis
Health System functions in the heart of an outdoor recreational paradise;
appreciation of the outdoors is intrinsic to our lifestyle, whether
simply as a sensory indulgence or a physical outlet. There is a dramatic
change of seasons: winters are cold and snowy, spring and fall are
mild and beautiful, and summer brings high temperatures and lots of
fun in the sun. From time to time, Elkins is the coldest spot in the
nation.
Elkins is just a short distance from three major ski resorts—Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline. The area offers an array of outdoor activities, including kayaking/canoeing, pristine hunting and fishing areas, caving and rock climbing and access to numerous golf courses. Area visitors and residents routinely have the opportunity to view West Virginia’s diverse wildlife population in their natural habitat at the French Creek Game Reserve, or just a casual Sunday afternoon drive on one of our many back roads. Our local state parks offer opportunities to watch the annual hawk migration. The area presents excellent camping hideaways and exciting rivers to white-water raft. Regionally, 13,000 miles of secondary country roads are available for recreational four-wheeling, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing; 5,000 such roads are within the Randolph County borders. In addition, Elkins was recently named the top mountain biking destination in the country.
The area is a cultural haven. Each year, Elkins hosts the Mountain State Forest Festival, one of the oldest, largest and most active festivals in the state. Nearby Davis and Elkins College holds the Augusta Heritage Festival annually; participants have up to six weeks each summer to experience any type of folk art including music, cooking, pottery throwing, log cabin building and much more. The Randolph County Community Arts Center offers visitors and residents year-round opportunities for cultural enrichment.
Residents and visitors can develop themselves physically as well as mentally. The area supports several fitness centers for adults and presents a diverse assortment of organized sports and recreation activities for children. Randolph County is the home of a Rails to Trails project that converts unused railroad tracks to finished trails, perfect for walking, jogging, biking or cross-country skiing. One trail begins in Randolph County and ends in neighboring Tucker County; the path travels through natural wilderness, offering glimpses of wildlife, streams and mountainous splendor.
Central West Virginia has a high rate of tourism, and Elkins is one of the top five tourist destinations nationally. In recent years, Elkins was named one of the 100 best small towns to live in, as well as one of the 100 best small arts communities. Quality of life is supported by a low crime rate, a low cost of living, good school systems and communities that foster the growth and development of children, both intellectually and physically. Colleges in Buckhannon and Philippi help to maintain cultural opportunities for both residents and visitors.
Our area is within a five-hour drive of two-thirds of the United States. National and international airports are located within 175 miles.
