Organ Donation—the Gift of Life
Many people get a second chance at life through
transplant surgery. Yet candidates for transplant surgery far outnumber
persons willing to designate themselves as donors.
To help ease the serious shortage of donated organs and tissues, West Virginia has passed the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (1984). This act ensures that every person desiring to give an anatomical gift can easily do so and that every acute care hospital can communicate the need for donations and assist people wishing to make such a gift.
Davis Memorial Hospital complies with this act by offering families of medically suitable deceased patients the opportunity to make an anatomical gift.
Information about this subject can also be obtained by calling the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) at (800) 366-6777 or visit their web site at www.core.org.
Davis Memorial Hospital will provide information and referral to people who request assistance to donate their body specifically to medical research.
